Grand Final - 24.03.07 - Result Comments
The Studs Scribe reviews matches
The weather was less than impressive for tennis on Saturday but the teams acquitted well to the conditions to bring home the flags:-
D1 - There was no stopping our top-of-the-ladder combination from stamping itself as the champion team in the Doubles 1 grade. Although we went into the big match without injured captain Jan, the depth of the team was evident from the outset. Big Clark and Trevor raced through the 1st set 6/0 and were closely followed by Stevie Boy and Bretty who conceded just 2 games. A 10 game lead after two sets was just the start we were looking for and it was soon consolidated by Vikki and Wendy, who out-classed Karra’s Marie Levet-Hall and Carmel Linehan 6/2 in a crucial set. On the opposite court, Vicki and Bev let a 4/1 lead slip to go down 6/4. The return men’s sets saw a surprise 6/2 loss by Trevor and Bretty who were well beaten by Sam Everist and John Kennedy. The status quo was maintained, however, with Clark and Stevie reciprocating that score with a convincing 6/2 victory. The ladies then returned to the courts and took us into the mixed with a 12 game advantage, courtesy of a 6/3 win by Wendy and Bev and a 6/3 loss to Vikki and Vicki. Despite the handy lead, Bev was as nervous as a West Coast Eagle giving a urine sample. Trevor was hoping the match rested on Bev’s 4th mixed but Bretty and Wendy put that quickly to rest with a crushing 6/1 assault, whilst Clark and Vicki came from behind to sneak over the line in a tie-breaker. Eighteen games up with two sets to go and Bev’s mood swing was as dramatic as Graham says it can be. Stevie Wonder and Vikki held sway 6/3 and then Trevor and Bev made it a mixed clean sweep with a tidy 6/4 win over Sam and Carmel, giving us a 9 sets 63 to 3 sets 40 victory. Well done team!!
D3 - An undefeated home-and-away season was not going to be wasted by our Doubles 3 champions, despite their close call against St Mary’s in the 2nd Semi. The men opened proceedings in the cool and blustery conditions with youngsters Matt Brett and Trent Murphy having a great duel with their opponents before succumbing in a tie-break. Elder statesmen Steve Murphy and Neville Thorn handled the wind beautifully in defeating SportZone player of the year, Gary Cooney, and his partner 6/3. This was a telling victory and set the scene for the reverse doubles where Steve and Matt blitzed Gary and Pat O’Sullivan 6/1. Neville and Trent rammed home the advantage with a convincing 6/2 win. The ladies showed their superiority with a three sets to one result. Ladies Club Champion, Gale Hatton, paired with Kate Murphy in the opening set for a 6/4 victory and followed up with the same scoreline with Pauline. On the opposite court, Paige and Pauline had a tussle with former Stud Judi Freer and her partner, going down 6/4. The tables were reversed by Kate and Paige with a fine 6/2 win. Going into the mixed we held a comfortable 12 game lead (ironically, the same as Doubles 1 on the adjacent courts). The result was quickly confirmed with Steve and Gale galloping home 6/2 and Neville & Pauline putting it beyond reach of the St Mary’s challengers with a 6/4 win. The remaining two sets were split, with Trent & Paige coming off 2nd best in a tie-break, whilst Matt & Kate did the opposite clinching a tie-break 7/2. The final score was 9 sets 67 to 3 sets 45. A great day for Steve, who eclipsed the SportZone winner 18/6 in a sensational performance. Neville, Gale and Kate were also in command all day, but it was genuinely a team performance. Commiserations to Pete and Graeme, who both succumbed to war injuries and were confined to providing courtside inspiration, as did Kaye and Captain Ann in her Harry Hopman role as non-playing mentor.
Semi Final - 03.03.07 - Result Comments
Another extremely hot day on the courts, with dark clouds looming and a couple of showery periods to cool the temperature slightly, saw the following results recorded:-
A1 - It was always going to be a tough day against the 4th team McEwen and although we came home strongly in the mixed, it was not enough to snatch a win, with the Studs going down by just 4 games. Out of the 5 men’s sets, 3 were tie breakers with all sets going the way of McEwen. Tom played well to win his singles 6/2. In the ladies sets the 1st two doubles were also tie breakers, again going against the Studs. Janelle again stepped up to no. 1 singles, winning 6/4, while Julie had a tough time in the heat to get 2 games. With 9 games down going into the mixed, Captain Rod’s tactics were aimed at winning 3 of the 4 final sets and it almost came off. Rod & Janelle at 1st mixed and Kai & Donna at 4th mixed both did the trick with convincing 6/1 victories. The pressure was on Tom & Julie and Ayden & Amanda and both pairs tried hard but could not bridge the gap. Well done team for getting to the Semi Final when, at the start of the season, it looked likely that we may not even field an A1 team. A big thank you to Rod for his leadership and determination throughout the year and to Janelle, Amanda & Kai, well done on a fantastic first season at the Club. It was great to have you in the team.
D1 - Despite the loss of Bretty and Vicki P to injury, the clash with 2nd placed McEwen Reserve was rather one-sided, with the Studs stealing a 24 game break leading up to the mixed and then extending that lead to a 27 game winning margin. The men were in control from the outset – the first two sets going our way 6/1 (Clark & Trevor) and 6/2 (Jerry & Steve). Clark & Steve then battled hard to recover from 0/3 to sneak home in a tie-break. Meanwhile, Jerry continued his sensational 2007 form, combining with Trevor for a 6/0 whitewash. On the ladies courts, Vikki & Wendy found themselves behind the 8-ball throughout a long first set but hung in well for a 6/4 loss, whilst Jan & Bev evened the ledger with a well-played 6/4 win. The reverse doubles were more comfortable; 6/1 to Vikki & Jan and 6/3 to Wendy & Bev. The rain clouds were threatening so afternoon tea was deferred in favour of settling the result without delay. Trevor & Wendy were in immediate trouble, staring down the barrel at 1/4 but scrambled their way to a tie-break victory. Similarly at No. 2, Clark & Jan were slow out of the blocks allowing their opponents to scamper away to 3/0 before recovering to win 6/4. Jerry & Vikki did it a little more conventionally, always holding sway to score 6/4. The final stanza saw the old duo of Steve and Bevvy allow McEwen to salvage a 2nd set, going down 6/4. All-in-all, a very solid performance and a good lead up to the Grand Final. Our opponents will be either McEwen or Karramomus, who downed Lemnos by just 4 games. It’s a long break to the big day, so important to get to training this Thursday to keep in touch.
A2 - Unfortunately did not reach the finals but thank you to those that helped out with their umpiring duties.
A3 - Again, unfortunately did not reach the finals but thank you to those that helped out with their umpiring duties.
D3 - Results to come.
A4 - Results to come.
Round 16 - 17.02.07 - Result Comments
A good day out for the Club with four of the six senior teams having good wins. The Scribe reviews each match:-
A1 - An important game against 5th placed Central Park went the way of the Studs by 24 games. The ladies doubles were won in convincing style 18/7, with Janelle & Donna (6/2), Amanda & Donna (6/2) and Amanda and Julie (6/3). Julie also scored a tenacious tie-break victory in her singles. Great to see Donna back after her wrist injury and get through the afternoon without difficulty. On the men's court, Roddy D brought his power game with him to concede only one game against Daryl Bennet, whilst Tommy T fought back from 3/5 and receiving serve at 40/15 to edge out James Evans in a tie-break. Ayden and Kai were in excellent form accounting for their opponents 6/3 with some fine serve and volley doubles tennis. After searching all season for the right mixed combinations, it seems the formula may have been hatched with 3 of the 4 sets going our way in fine style. Ayden, Donna and Amanda were all three-set winners. Next week sees our team take on 4th placed McEwen Reserve in what is certain to be a preview of the first semi-final. Go hard!!!
D1 - A tough encounter against St Mary's, who were fighting desperately to upset our top-of-the-ladder combination and scramble a place in the finals. We were off to a flier with Stevie Boy and the world's most eligible bachelor (Jerry, of course) cleaning up 6/0. On the adjacent court, Bretty and Trevor didn't have things so easy, succumbing to the Walsh boys 6/4 in a very tight set. Worse still, however, Trevor's powerful back muscles couldn't support his booming service action and he was confined to bar duties for the rest of the afternoon. Up stepped big Clarke (thanks Bionda!) as an able bodied substitute, soldiering his way to a 6/2 win with Jerry and 6/4 with Vikki T. In the meantime, the much-maligned St Mary's ladies were taking it right up to our girls with some aggressive ground strokes. Jan and Vicki were on the receiving end of a 1/6 loss, whilst Vikki warmed-down from country week with two tie-break wins with Wendy and Jan. The injury toll was rising continually, with Vicki P taking a heavy fall in her mixed set with Steve and one of the opposition ladies wearing a powerful serve in the ear from her partner. Well done to Jerry and Steve, who both won their three sets and returned 18/3 and 18/8 respectively.
A2 - Friday night at the indoor centre beckoned our struggling A2 troops and the end result saw some real positives from the younger members of the team. Michael and Lewis both outpointed much more experienced opponents to win their singles matches 6/5 and 6/5 respectively. A great effort boys, well done. On the ladies courts, Louise had a wonderful 6/1 singles victory. Alas, these fine efforts couldn't get the team over the line and at the end of the night it was a 26 game deficit. Captain Reedy ground his way to a sudden halt after a hard day at the office, hitting the brick wall with his head instead of the ball and finding his way to the pillow quicker than a Clark first-serve. On another note, best wishes to Jayden Wilkie with his recovery from surgery a couple of weeks back. Word has it that the big fellow is coming along just fine and will be back in full training for next season very shortly.
A3 - Our hard working A3 team put up a fine performance against the strong Central Park outfit, snaring 4 sets and going down by a not-too-shabby 25 games. The ladies had the upper hand over their counterparts, winning 3 of the 5 sets. Julie Jones scored another singles victory, 6/3, whilst Annette Johnstone had a tough tussle before going down 6/4 in a very credible performance. Julie then teamed with Kaye Murdoch for a 6/3 win and Annette partnered young Ali Reed to take a tiebreaker 8/6. Ali put in a great performance in her first A3 hit out, grabbing 5 games with Kaye and then going down 6/4 with Broph. The blokes had a hard time of it and were soundly beaten in all 5 sets but Ralph managed to claw some ground back in teaming with Julie for a 6/4 mixed win. Well done Julie on winning all 3 sets and finishing 8 games up - that's a super effort!
D3 - The clash with 2nd placed St Mary's turned out to be a bit of an anti-climax with the Studs cruising to a 36 game win. Only two sets were conceded for the afternoon in what was a great warm-up for the finals. Steve & Kate Murphy were in top form, both finishing 12 up, Matt Brett a very impressive 11 games up, whilst Gayle Hatton continued her fantastic season with 10 up. Well done team.
A4 - A victory against Central Park was required to secure 4th position and the coveted finals berth and the youngsters left nothing on the court to romp home by 50 games. The boys dominated all day against a struggling opposition and recorded some one-sided results. In a scintillating performance Jarrod Brett dropped just 2 games for the afternoon, junior Jake Ford stepped up with a whopping 18/3, The Quademeister gave away a miserly 4 games and Jackson George conceded 6 games. The girls were not to be denied either. Kelly romped home 6/0 in her singles and teamed with Quademeister for a 6/1 waltz in the mixed. Olivia Formica grabbed the chance to play seniors and finished the day with a tiebreak loss with Sarah, 6/2 down with Cara and then squared the ledger in partnering young Jake for a 6/1 win. Well done Livvy & Jake!!
Round 14 - 03.02.07 - Result Comments
This week Mother Nature produced another very hot day around 38° so with only some minor heat exhaustion to report the following results were achieved:-
A1 - The whole team contributed very well to a 45 game win over Congupna. Only one set was lost for the day - in the men's doubles. Rod Densworth was firing with a 6-0 win in his singles, while Tom Tennant also played fantastic to win 6-1 (although a lack of confidence was shown by Mum Vikki when asked for score and one finger was shown). Janelle Gannon and Julie Heard played will in the heat to win their singles 6-1 & 6-3 respectively. With four courts to use in the mixed sets, it was a race to see who could get off first. Tom & Janelle snuck in 6-1, followed closely by Ayden & Amanda 6-2, then Rod & Julie 6-2 and to a long set to finish Kai & Vikki winning 6-5. With a bye next week, hopefully Donna Brett may be back from injury in a fortnight's time.
D1 - The ladder leaders took the drive out to bottom-of-the-ladder Dookie, passing through the great tennis-breeding hamlets of Pine Lodge and Cosgrove along the way. Bev just had to stop by mum and dad's and treat Wendy, Jan and Vicki to some of Dawn's oven-fresh scones, complete with a litre or two of strawberry jam and cream. In the meantime, our more disciplined and time-concsious blokes arrived early, devoting 30 minutes to the practice courts whilst waiting for their well-nourished partners to arrive. At the end of the day, not a set was conceded and a 40 game win eventuated. Bretty and Stevie Boy came close, recovering from a 2/4 deficit to claw their way back to a 6/5 win. Jerry Abraham displayed no ill-effects from his 5 week vacation in the sub-continent, returning to a 6/1, 6/2, 6/1 afternoon. Jerry spent more time receiving advice on dating and wife selection from his caring and well-meaning teammates than he did playing tennis. The day was full of wonderful highlights, including the impressive new playing facilities at Dookie, the sumptuous afternnon tea, the RSA induced mini VB stubbies and Jerry's guided tour through Dookie town.
A2 - Unfortunately, a late withdrawal from the team left Captain Reedy without a full compliment and we had to forfeit the match to Kialla Park.
A3 - No results as yet.
D3 - No results as yet.
A4 - Not a good day out for our finals aspirants, going down to 2nd placed St Brendan's by 25 games. There were some bright spots, however, with Nathan Manders and Jack Tennant clean-sweeping the men's singles 6/0 and 6/1 respectively. Kelly O'Sullivan and Jack also had a nice 6/1 mixed victory. Not to worry, team, a couple of wins in the remaining matches will put you back in with a big chance.
Round 13 - 20.01.07 - Result Comments
With the business end of the season fast approaching, yesterday's results from the OS teams looking for a finals berth were encouraging. The Scribe tells it how it was!!
A1 - After dismal losses in the past three rounds, Roddy D's rockets turned the tables yesterday with a resounding victory over KP Gold. Solid wins by the Skipper (6/2), Tommy T (6/1) and Jules (6/4) in their singles were matched by equally impressive doubles results. Kai continued his good form from last week, getting home 6/2 with big Clark and 6/1 with Tom, whilst the powerful Densworth/Pettigrew duo had too many smoking guns for their opponents, racing to a 6/2 win. On the ladies courts, Janelle had two tie-breakers, missing out in both with Amanda and Julie, whilst Julie & Amada had an excellent 6/1 win. Julie and Tom did a Lazarus in the mixed, coming from 5/0 down and then 5/4, 40 love down to snatch a tie-breaker. The low-light of the victory was the injuries sustained by Donna via a couple of nasty falls, incurring damage to her wrist as well as shedding a bit of skin. No doubt Donna will look forward to next week's rest and be back firing in Round 14.
D1 - The Studs lined up against KP, one of only two teams our mature aged team has succumbed to this season. The result this time around was suitably different with a solid 12 game victory achieved. Bretty was in relentless doubles form, providing his opponents with hard - but fair - competition. Three men's doubles wins and three ladies doubles wins were enough to take an (almost) unassailable lead into the mixed, which was fortunate given we headed to the bar to celebrate a little early, scoring only one mixed win through Vikki & Trevor (6/2). Surprisingly, Bev was usurped by Vikki and Vicki for the Sportzone votes this week, despite having the pick of the partners all afternoon! Thanks to Brett Johnstone for sacrificing himself in the mixed.
A2 - Reedy's rampaging racqueteers ran into a roadblock yesterday in the form of Tallygaroopna. Jayden Wilkie was a part of the only two winning sets, combining exquisitely with Reedy to win 6/1 and then partnering Sandy Stradling for an impressive 6/2 mixed victory. Well done Jayden, Reedy and Sandy. Alas, two sets wasn't enough to bring home the bacon and a 24 game defeat resulted.
A3 - After the euphoria of last week's win, our A3 team couldn't keep the momentum going, succumbing to St Andrew's by . Despite quality fill-ins in the form of Jones' in-laws, Gerard and Julie, we could manage only two sets for the day, courtesy of a 6/4 singles win by Bluey Tennant and a 6/2 mixed win by Kaye and Bluey. Ralph was on the wrong end of two tie-breakers (4/7 with Eddie & 4/7 with Annette) whilst Kerrie & Kaye both worked hard in their respective singles to go down 6/4.
D3 - A close encounter for the undefeated Doubles 3 combination, scraping in by just 14 games against McEwen Reserve. Our ladies held sway, with Ann Murphy (6/2 with Pip Whitelaw, 6/2 with Pauline and a resounding 6/1 with youngster Peter Pettigrew) & Pauline Pettigrew (6/2 with Paige, 6/2 with Ann & 6/5 with Graeme Murphy) leading the charge. Bill Murphy was also in solid form scoring 6/3 with brother Graeme and 6/3 with the young fella Pete.
A4 - Yesterday's battle with top-of-the-ladder St Mary's turned out to be a fizzer for our young finals aspirants. Winning only four sets for the day, we went down by 33 games. Shy-boy Jack Tennant had the better of former Stud Ron Don all day, teaming with The Quademiester for a 6/4 doubles win, followed by a 6/1 singles waltz and then concluding the afternoon with Capt. Sarah in the mixed, cleaning up 6/1. Well done Quademiester, Sarah and Ron. Cara Myers and Jarrod Brett had a well deserved tie-break victory (7/3) to record the only other win. Some serious work is required to secure that finals birth and score some wins come late February, but you have it in you, team, so get to it!
Round 12 - 13.01.07 - Result Comments
After training Thursday night in 40° heat, the weather dropped to a more tennis friendly 30° for Saturday's tennis with the following results recorded for the Studs:-
A1 - Played Friday night at Kialla Park following a late request from the home side. It was a lovely night for tennis but a shame most players were not at their usual best (maybe too good a rest over the Christmas period!!). It was a disappointing loss by 27 games but Kai Wilkie shone bright, being too strong for his young Kialla opponent, winning all 3 sets - the only sets to be won for the night. He combined beautifully with Tom Tennant and Ayden Murdoch to win both doubles sets 6-4 and then with Amanda Farrell for a convincing 6-0 victory. Well done Kai. The team now has a real challenge to regroup and stem the tide of three losses in a row. The Scribe thinks some hard work on the practice court is in order!!
D1 - The studs had a good win against Lemnos, winning by 24 games. Bev Myers led the team winning all 3 sets and finishing her day 14 games up. Clark Pettigrew and David Brett joined the team this week to combine with Trevor Tennant and Steve Jones to win all mens sets with 2 tie breakers. The women had easier sets winning 3 out of the 4 and then teamed with the guys to win 3 out of the 4 mixed sets. The win retains the Studs spot at the top of the Doubles competition.
A2 - Shepp North had too much age and experience over our A2 Studs this week winning by 40 games. Captain Bucko Reed won 2 of his 3 sets and was the only player to win two sets for his side. We were struggling to find players for the first game back and thanks to Phil Daff for helping out and joining the team this week. Better luck next week.
A3 - What a Win!! First game back after Christmas break, the Studs battled hard to take the 4 points off Shepp North by only 1 game. It came down to the last set of the day with Kaye and Eddie clinching victory with a 6/3 mixed win. Bill Tennant had a hard fought tie break win in his singles, whilst Kerrie Lambert had a little more up her sleeve with a 6/3 victory. Kaye Murdoch had a great day finishing 18/9 with Ralph Whitehead also having a good day finishing 15/12. Well done to all the team for contributing, just goes to show every game counts!!
D3 - Another easy day for the Doubles 3 Studs winning against St Brendan's at home by 30 games. With a few players unavailable, Neville Thorn was a very able fill-in, finishing the day with an impressive 18/1. Samara Murphy also filled in and, after not playing for approx 6 months, found the going easy, winning all sets to finish 18/7. Young guns Trent Murphy 18/6 and Matt Brett 17/12 continue to do well for their side.
A4 - The Studs young A4 team has notched up another win to stay in the four, toppling Kialla Park by just 4 games. With a number of players unavailable, Quade Johnstone, Nathan Reid and Heidi O'Sullivan were happy to play and a big thank you to the trio for helping this side to another win. Although the boys could not capture a set, they did have some tight tussles and a couple of tie breakers. The girls had better luck winning 4 of the 5 ladies sets. With two sets apiece in the mixed, Nathan and Heidi combined to win 6-0 and seal the victory. Heidi was the star for the Studs, conceding only 2 games for the day. Well done team and keep it up.
Round 11 - 16.12.06 - Result Comments
A1 - Again the Studs went down to St Andrews by only 8 games. Skipper Rod Densworth led from the front in the men's division and was the only player to win all 3 sets, with an impressive display to clean up Jarrod Rathjen 6-1 in the singles. Ayden Murdoch put in a consistent performance but Tom Tennant and Kai Wilkie struggled against the Saints men and were unable to capture a set. The women were competitive with Janelle Gannon again being the most consistent in the ladies with 15/12. Heading into the mixed the Studs were 8 games down and couldn't bridge the gap any further, splitting the mixed two sets apiece.
D1 - What a turn around! After losing last time to St Andrew's by only 4 games, the studs were not going to allow that to happen again. Despite some unavailabilities, the big guns rallied to cement a 44 game win! Wendy Swan & Clark Pettigrew had a great day with 18/1 & 18/5 respectively. Jan Fordyce & Vicki Prewett are always solid performers with 18/4 each for the day. But what happened in the mixed with the Tennant's losing the only set for the day! And what was the last minute change with Vicki Prewett being placed with Brett Johnstone rather than Steve Jones. (Could it be that Captain Jan didn't want a repeat Carlton-like performance in the mixed? But surely that couldn't happen again!)
A2 - Down by 25 games at Murchison but no result sheet received.
A3 - The Studs went down to Kialla Park by only 9 games. Unfortunately our men were unable to capture a set but the women had a great day out, winning 4 out of 5 of their sets. Julie Jones & Kerrie Lambert did really well to win singles sets 6-5 & 6-3 respectively. 10 games down going into the mixed sets which were shared, the Studs were only able to reduce the margin by 1 game.
D3 - Another easy day for the Studs in Doubles 3 winning by 50 games against Tatura East. The whole team played well and did not lose a set for their efforts. Trent Murphy came back from a back/shoulder injury to only drop 2 games for the day. Matt Brett and Stephen Murphy concede only three games each, whilst Gale Hatton and Kaye Murphy were also very consistent with 18/5's for the day.
A4 - The Studs gained a break in 4th spot on the ladder from rivals Karramomus after defeating the 5th placed team by by 21 games. What a great result, after losing to them the first time around by 12 games. The boys performed well, winning four of the five mens sets. Jack Tennant & Jarrod Brett won both singles 6-0 & 6-2, while Adam Formica and Steve Collins played superb tennis to win their doubles 6-0. But the girls did a tremendous job to win four of the five ladies sets compared to last time. Clara Reed had a great day winning all 3 sets to finish 18/12. Kelly O'Sullivan & Sarah Murdoch also played fantastic tennis to win their singles matches 6-4 & 6-2 respectively. The last mixed set was forfeited by Sarah and Steve due to injury but it didn't impact on the final result and hopefully you're back on the court soon. Well done to you all.
Round 10 - 09.12.06 - Result Comments
No Result Comments this week due to very hot smoky conditions in which tennis was cancelled.
Round 9 - 02.12.06 - Result Comments
A1
- Had a good start against Central Park and entered the mixed with an 11 game
break. A clean sweep by Central Park in the mixed saw our ladder leaders go
down by one game. Janelle Gannon continued with her outstanding form, scoring
a great singles victory 6-1, doubles 6-1 with ALF (Amanda Farrell) and then
put the pressure on Ayden Murdoch in the mixed but could only scurry 4 games.
It was a surprise loss for A1, especially going down in all four mixed. No doubt
the team will bounce back next week.
D1
- In the clash of 1st and 2nd on the ladder, our Doubles 1 team had a good win
over St Mary's by 15 games. The ladies did their bit again to help the men over
the line, winning 3 out of 4 sets. Vikki Tennant 16/7, Jan Fordyce 17/9 and
Wendy Swan 16/8 were all in good form against strong opposition. The men continued
their inconsistent season, winning their first two sets but then switched the
result to lose the next two. St Mary's had the upper hand in the mixed, taking
3 close sets from the Studs, but Grant and Wendy cleaned up 6-2 to enable us
to kick 2 games clear at the top of the ladder.
A2
- A closer day for A2, only going down by 6 games to Sportszone. Evelyn Popelier
had a very good day and was the only 3 set winner, winning both ladies doubles
sets 6-1 and partnering with Michael Fordyce to win the only mixed set 6-1.
Michael also had a fantastic 6/1 singles win and ended the day 15/8.
A3
- The studs
struggled against Central Park going down by 20 games. The men were unable to
find a winning combination in their sets but the women did better winning 4
out of 5 sets. Well done Julie Jones winning #2 singles (even with leg injury
from previous week) and again to Ralph Whitehead and Kerrie Lambert winning
#1 mixed in a tie breaker.
D3
- St Mary's were obviously a little bit more prepared to take on our Doubles
3 team with the Studs winning by only 12 games. With Gayle Hatton out, Paige
Williams returned after a number of weeks absent. Thanks to Jake Ford (another
B2 Junior) for helping out and won a couple of sets for his efforts. Well done
Pauline Pettigrew 18/4, Graeme Murphy 18/8 and Kaye Murphy 16/9.
A4 - The Studs won by 13 games over Central Park. Look Out, Jack's Back! And what a day, Jack Tennant winning all sets with an 18/8, finishing the day with Sarah Murdoch 6-2, who also had a good day with 15/8. Both won their singles 6-4 and 6-2 respectively. But we can certainly not go past Adam Formica who also had a ripper, winning all sets and only dropping 4 games for the day. Teamed with Jack 6-2, Jarrod Brett 6-1 and finally with Deanne Murdoch at #1 mixed 6-1. Well done Adam, keep up the good work.
Round 8 - 25.11.06 - Result Comments
A1 - While most players had a rest during the BYE, Ayden Murdoch and Donna Brett filled in for Doubles 1.
D1 - The studs got over the line by just 6 games to defeat Karramomus. With the Tennant's out and a number of other regulars unavailable, 4 fill ins were required. Stevey Jones collected the 3 votes with an impressive 18/6 (Had great partners in David Brett, Grant Dreher and Bev Myers!!) The men dominated by winning all mens sets but the ladies struggled a little only winning 1 out of the 4 sets. The mixed were shared with two sets each.
A2 - No details as yet.
A3 - Unfortunately, St Brendans were way too strong for the Studs on the day winning by 27 games. Julie Jones suffered a leg injury in her first ladies doubles and struggled through the second set but was unable to complete mixed set with Sam (who had to race to catch a bus). Thanks to Jason Popelier for filling in and playing #1 singles while Bill Tennant was away.
D3 - With nearly a full house of Murphy's (Gale Hatton being the odd one out!) the Studs cleaned up Shepp North by 59 games. Well done Stephen, Bill, Trent, Graeme, Kate, Kaye, Ann Murphy and Gale with only 13 games lost between them.
A4 - What a great win!! Even after St Mels winning 2 sets more, the Studs were still able to win the day by 3 games. Quade Johnstone played well to finish day with 18/8 (filling in for mate, Jack Tennant) Alanna Harris played well by winning #2 singles 6-0. The Studs were 8 games down with 2 sets remaining, won both sets (Steve Collins & Cara Myers) 6-0 and (Quade Johnstone & Clara Reed) 6-1 to win the day. Well done to you all.
Round 7 - 18.11.06 - Result Comments
After one of the coldest weeks on record for November in many years, was followed by one the best days for Tennis. Conditions were almost perfect to record the following results:
A1 - A very convincing 45 game win by The Studs over Congupna this week. All players performed extremely well with, would you believe, Donna Brett being the only person to loose a set. The stand out players for the day were Tommi T (18/3) winning all three sets 6-1. He played very well in the singles, cleaning up ex-stud man Rick Myers. Roddy D had a tight tussle with Xavier Tanner, scoring in a tie-break, whilst hard hitting David Brett blasted his way to 18/5 and Janelle Gannon, who was on fire with her serving and ground strokes, finished 18/7.
D1 - Another good win. With both Trevor & Vikki Tennant unavailable, mature age student, Wendy Swan, new age student Jason Popelier and ageless student Ralph Whitehead (stepping up from A3) were more than able to combine with the regular stars to record a big win. Vicki Prewett had a cracker jack day with an impressive 18/2, both ladies doubles sets were 6-1 (carrying both Jan Fordyce and Bev Myers to wins!!!) and then finishing the day with Stevie "Wonder" Jones 6-0. Ralph stepped up to the challenge being the best man for the day with 18/4 (with just a little help from an injured opponent!). Bev Myers also put in a consistent performance with an 18/4 at the end of the day. Well done team to win by 25 games.
A2 - No details as yet. (C'mon Reedy, you need to get your score sheet in so we can all read about your performances).
A3 - Unfortunately, Undera was way too strong for the Studs who went down by 42. Bluey Tennant 18/12 was the only player to win sets for the Studs, 6-4 with Eddie Murdoch, 6-3 in singles and a tie breaker with Kaye Murdoch, coming back from 5/2 down. (Maybe the last minute call-up for Juniors during the morning helped Bill get ready in time for the afternoon?) Thanks also to Daniel Brophy for filling in for Ralph. Two matches were forfeited to Undera in the mixed. both 6-1 with Eddie Murdoch being called for work and Lyn suffering a leg injury. Hope you're recovering ok Lyn. Better luck next week!!
D3 - With a half the team out, our reliable band of fill-ins played very well to get yet another win for Doubles 3, but by only 25 games this week. Thanks to Neville Thorn with 18/4 and Kerrie Lambert for helping out on her day-off from A3. Other consistent players were Graeme Murphy 18/6 and Pauline Pettigrew also 18/6. The youngest members of the team, Matthew Brett and Kate Murphy, did very well to win the 1st Mixed in a tie breaker 7-4 while out of the remaining three mixed, only 2 games were given to the opposition. Keep up the good form!!
A4 - St Brendan's was too strong for the Studs who went down by 44 games, with Steve Collins and Adam Formica being the only pair to win a set 6-3. Keep your heads up team and better luck next week.

Finally a beautiful sunny day, at least until around 4.30pm onwards when strong winds made it a little cold and everyone went running for jumpers etc. 4 out of the six teams were victorious this week to get the following results:-
A1
- The whole team contributed well to record a 20 game win over Kialla Park Blue.
It was an interesting day with six tie breakers recorded. The men dominated
the day by winning all sets with the stand out being Tom Tennant with an impressive
18/6, won #2 singles 6-1, teamed up with Kai Wilkie to win 6-1 and ended day
with Julie Heard with 6-4 win. Kai Wilkie and Clark Pettigrew both had great
results being 18/8 each at the end of the day. The ladies had to fight a little
harder, only getting one set out of five but got to 3 tie breakers. Nikki Jeffery
and Amanda Farrell had the only 6-0 win for day. Studs won three of four mixed
to finish off day. Well done team.
D1
- Doubles 1 had an easy day winning all sets and cleaning up Lemnos by an impressive
50 games. David Brett, filling in had a great day with 18/0 (Amazing how well
some people play with hang overs!!!) Great to see all players in the positives
for the day, Jan Fordyce 18/5, Bev Myers 18/5 and Grant Dreher 18/5. Grant is
so chuffed about his form resurgence that he is demanding a spot back in A1.
A2
- Went down by 17 games to Shepp North, but no further details as yet.
A3
- Shepp North
was too strong for the Studs this week by, downing us by 11 games. Kerrie Lambert
got out of playing singles this week and teamed with Annette Johnstone for a
sensational 6-0 victory. Four tie breakers were also played on day and shared
by both sides but it was great to see the men step up and win singles matches,
Bill Tennant #1 Singles 6-4 and well done Anthony Brophy battling it out to
win tie breaker 7/1 in #2 singles. Playing #2 mixed, Ralph Whitehead and Lyn
McCormack teamed up again to win the only mixed for the day 6-3 (Ralph was determined
to keep his end up for fear of being on the receiving end of a wakeup call serve
from Lyn!)
D3
- Another easy win for Doubles 3, but by a reduced margin of just 33 games.
Matthew Brett did well to end the day with 18/5 followed by Graeme Murphy and
Gale Hatton both 18/6 and Stephen Murphy back in this week with 18/7. A flurry
of four mixed victories capped another great day.
A4 - Had another great win over Kialla Park by 20 games. The best players for the day were Jack Tennant 18/3 (doubles specialist for the day!), Kelly O'Sullivan again did very well with 18/9 and winning #1 singles 6-3, whilst Sarah McCormack played very well in #2 singles to win 6-2 and finish the day at 18/8. Well done Sarah. All players finished off the day well by winning all mixed sets. A4 was the duty team this week so a special thanks needs to go to Kelly O'Sullivan, Clara Reed and Jack Tennant who did a fantastic job in cleaning the Clubhouse and toilets and washing floors. Great effort, well done.

Another shocking day for tennis weather wise. (Someone needs to tell the Big Guy upstairs it's Summer Sport Season!!) Very cold with strong southerly winds made it not so enjoyable for all players with only two teams out of the six being victorious for this round. With most of us wrapped up in our blankets between sets, we braved the conditions to get the following results:-
A1 - It was a tough struggle for Studs with ladies winning 3 out of 5 sets. Skipper Rod Densworth led from the front in the men's division and was the only man to win a set, cleaning up Peter Pattison 6-1. The mixed sets were shared winning two each. Well done Janelle Gannon 15/10, Donna Brett 16/12 & Amanada Farrall 13/12. Big thank you to Life Member Grant Dreher for filling in (we all know the 7/18 scoreline is simply due to lack of practice!!) The team appreciated your positive influences. Also could someone remind Donna Brett she needs to bring her tennis racquet to actually play tennis!!
D1 - Had their first loss for the season going down to St Andrews by only 4 games. Again the ladies won more sets than men going in to the mixed with a 2 game lead but the Studs only great win came from # 1 couple Trevor and Vikki Tennant 6-1. The women were again steady with Jan Fordyce 15/9, Vikki Tennant 14/9 & Bev Myers 16/12. Another stella performance from the great man Owen Starrit who lent his guille and skill to a fantastic 6/2 result with Steve Jones. Steve then shocked mixed partner Vicki Prewett with a Carlton-like performance in the mixed, scoring the big donut!! That weather sure was bad!!
A2 - Well done, first win for the Season beating Murchison by 20 games!! Great performances by all, with Rose Reed 18/4 & Michael Fordyce 18/6 leading the charge. Well done Lewis Tenace and Michael Fordyce both winning singles 6-2 & 6-1 respectively. Thanks again to fill-ins Evelyn Popelier and Nicki Jeffery, who had a great #1 singles victory, 6-3.
A3 - Had a real struggle against Kialla Park this week going down by 19 games. The leading performers were Annette Johnstone 18/9 and Sam Formica 15/11. Ex- Old Studs player Graham Jones was so fearful of confronting Annette and Sam in the mixed that he pulled a hamstring and forfeited. Gutsy effort Jonesy! No luck in any of the singles matches this week with Lyn McCormack taking out her frustrastion by hitting mixed partner Eddie Murdoch (who played #1 singles) with a serve. (Or was it just an accident / miss hit!!) Better luck next time team.
D3 - Another big win for Doubles 3 with Team Murphy winning all 12 sets, 4 of them to love!!. Big welcome back to Bill Murphy and Suzie Woodhouse. (Congrats to Suzie & Steve on the new arrival to your family.) Well done Bill Murphy 18/1, Trent Murphy 18/3, Pauline Pettigrew 18/4 & Gale Hatton 18/5. The Assoc'n gradings committee may have got this one wrong when it elected to move this team from Doubles 2 to Doubles 3!!
A4 - It was a tough day for our young A4 side going down to Karramomus by 12 games. The best players for Old Studs were Jack Tennant 15/8, Jarrod Brett 17/12 and Steve Collins 14/11. The boys won 4 out of the five mens sets. Well done Jack & Jarrod both winning singles 6-1 & 6-2 respectively. On the other hand the ladies found the opposition pretty strong and couldn't capture a set, but combined well with the boys to win two of the mixed and pushing a third in to a tie breaker. Great effort, keep it up.
Round 3 - 21.10.06 - Result Comments
A1 - Not the best weather for tennis, with cold, strong gusty winds but a great result. Our men too strong this week with Clark Pettigrew 18/1, Rod Densworth 18/5, David Brett 16/7 and Tom Tennant 12/14 for day but great result winning #2 singles 6-2. Welcome to new player Amanda Farrall, and big thanks to fill ins Clark, Erica Giffen and David Brett.
D1 - Another good win for Doubles 1 with the women showing they are the back bone of the team. Jan Fordyce 18/5, Vicki Prewett 18/6 with great assistance from Vikki Tennant and Bev Myers. Welcome and thank you to Owen Starritt for helping out this week.
A2 - A2 had a struggle this week. Welcome to Nicki Jeffery 14/12 playing # 1 and thanks to Sarah Murdoch 16/15 playing #2 (stepping up from A4) both winning Singles matches. Well done also to Lewis Tenace winning singles & mixed 6-3 and coming out even on games for day. Jayden Wilkie great effort at #1 singles loosing in tie breaker 7-3.
A3 - Great result this week for A3 winning first match for season. Again women too strong with Lyn McCormack 18/6, Kerrie Lambert 18/7 and both Julie Jones and Kay Murdoch 6 games up for day. Well done Julie, winning #1 singles 6-0. Welcome and thank you to Greg Whitehead for filling in, who was the only man in positives with 14/10 and great win in mixed with Lyn 6-0 (Lyn doesn't need Ralph to always win!!), along with Bill Tennant and Kaye Murdoch winning 6-0.
D3 - Another easy win for Doubles 3. Great results for Trent Murphy 18/1, Women all had great results with Gale Hatton 18/2 (back from minor injury last week - watch out for slippery grass around St Marys courts!), Kate Murphy 18/2, Pauline Pettigrew 18/4 and Paige Williams 18/6. Interesting score sheet with five 6-0 scores recorded. Again thank you to Peter Swan for filling in and Matthew Brett.
A4
- First loss this season for A4 against St Andrews. With captain Sarah Murdoch
playing A2, Kelly O'Sullivan stepped up for challenge being only player in positives
for Old Studs with 18/8, winning #1 singles 6-1. Jarrod Brett also played #1
singles just going down in tie breaker 7-2. Again not the best weather and conditions
for tennis but remember to enjoy and have fun. Better luck next time!
