Tuesday A Grade Sweeps into Grand Final

It was hot, windy conditions at McEwen Reserve (as usual) when our Tuesday A team met up with the Nathalia ladies in the Preliminary Final. Bev & Jan got off to a great start with a 6/1 win, whilst Rose & Lorraine went down 3/6. The middle two sets were both hour long marathons and unfortunately we went down in tie-breaks in both, taking us into the final two sets even on games but one down on sets. Desparate to make it through to the Grand Final, Bev & Lorraine and Rose & Jan fired up to win both sets 6/4. It was a terrific match played in great spirit by both teams. Vikki & Julie were in fine form on the sidelines, chatting away happily and oblivious to how the match was going! We're looking forward to fronting up to Central Park again next Tuesday and hopefully turn last week's result around.

Oh what a close call - level on games but down 4 sets to 2. Hard luck girls. More details to come as they filter through the network!

Ladies All Washed Up on Thursday 1st November

You've got to hand it to our girls. Last Thursday saw them out sweeping the courts for 20 minutes to get rid of the early morning precipitation in readiness for a 9am start. But wait, where was the opposition? 9:15 and still no sign of them. A quick phone call to the Politbureau was made, only to discover that events had been called off at 7:30 am. So, refusing to let their preparatory efforts and morning tea go wasted, the girls had a set or two, a chat or three and a scone or four. Now that's commitment!

Well done A Grade girls Bev, Jan, Lorraine and Rose on snatching victory against Harston. The win was achieved in the most thrilling circumstances with Bev and Lorraine getting up 6/5 in the final set to see the Studs win by two games. Trailing 4/5, it looked almost certain that we would fall short by the barest margin, but a real twist of fate (or was that an ankle) saw the set go our way. Well done ladies!

Thursday's Pennant team got into the groove last week. Vicki P, Lorraine, Vikki T and Eve really took it up to those slackers from Tatura Lawn, getting off the courts early and stuck into the morning tea before Urnie had time to even think about boiling. In what turned out to be a contest to see who could stay on the court longest, our girls went down 6 sets 36 to 0 sets 6 games!! We're not allowed to re-produce the individual set scores, suffice to say it wasn't pretty! Any suggestion the girls are tanking so they can resume their spot in A Grade next year is just a malicious rumour.

Mid-week Ladies at Country Week

12th - 16th February 2007

Question: How many times can a sponge cake rise?

Answer: Nowhere near as many as our mid-week girls can miss out on the silver ware at Country Week!

Once again Vikki, Jan, Rose, Bev, Kaye and Julie withstood the challenges of late nights and their preliminary round opponents, only to get pipped in the final on Friday. Six straight wins from Monday through to Wednesday, followed by a narrow last round loss on Thursday morning, saw the girls finish second. A semi-final exit looked a certainty when the Stud lasses found themselves one game down after 3 sets and Vikki and Rose having to snatch the final set with Rose carrying an injured groin. Reedy thought it impossible for Rose to come good without him being there to administer appropriate treatment and was in a panic trying to get the place cleaned up in readiness for his darling arriving home early. He of little faith!! An 8/7 tiebreak win was enough to get the team home, level on games but 3 sets to 1 up, and secure yet another Grand Final appearance. What followed the next day was not what we were all hoping for. Despite all best efforts, the mob from Kangaroo Flat bounced our girls and thwarted a glorious end to the week. Worse was to come, however, with the hapless quartet of Bev, Jan, Vikki and Rose abandoning Bev’s car on the Hume Freeway on the way home and hitching a ride into Chiltern to drown their sorrows. Under the pretence of fixing a broken fan-belt, Bev removed her stockings (the G-string wasn’t long enough) in a futile attempt to get the car going. Four lost ladies in tennis outfits caused some ripples amongst the Friday arvo clientele at the Chiltern watering hole until, at long last, the RACV came to the rescue and got our girls safely back on the road. Tune in same time next year for chapter 11 in this never-ending Desperate Housewives soap opera.
